REVOLUTION MEETS HIP-HOP
2Pac Connects Panther Chief of Staff with Hip-Hop Activist in Canada

"If the United States is successful in crushing the Black Panther Party it won't be too long before they crush the Southern Christian Leadership Conference or any other group trying to make things better."

Ralph Abernathy, Head of Dr. Martin Luther King's SCLC [1969]

Oakland/Toronto -- Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation Executive Director David Hilliard has formed an alliance with Hip-Hop Activist Raoul Juneja (a.k.a. Deejay Ra) aimed at empowering a new generation of multi-cultural Canadians growing increasingly suspicious of their
past 'American Censored' education.

Hilliard and Juneja's first collaboration, a tribute to hip-hop's "second-generation Black Panther" (the late Tupac Amaru Shakur), has been confirmed to take place September 7-13 across Canadian community radio stations and world-wide urban web sites through Juneja's award-winning Lyrical Knockout Entertainment company. With the help of Simon & Schuster, HarperCollins, Xenon Pictures and Hilliard's own Black Panther Records, the book/DVD/CD giveaway campaign is expected to be North America's largest to date dedicated solely to the assassinated rapper's political beliefs ("comparable to the ideology of India's Bhagat Singh," in Juneja's opinion).

As Chief of Staff of the Black Panther Party for Self-Defence, Hilliard was actively involved in every major activity of a 1960's and 70's international organization branded "the greatest threat to the internal security of the United States" by FBI director J. Edgar Hoover. Yet inner city poor across the globe saw the Panthers' free food, medical and legal initiatives as a vision of justice and radical change - a piece of history long obscured and almost lost until the 1993 publishing of Hilliard's "This Side of Glory: The Story of the Black Panther Party" autobiography and subsequent 1995 release of Mario Van Peebles' acclaimed "Panther" film.

In similar tradition, Juneja's Tupac tribute leading into Hilliard's efforts to have October officially recognized as 'Black Panther History Month' through a historic Canadian speaking & music venue (legendary Zimbabwe musician Thomas Mapfumo has already asked to perform) seem to echo new scholars' observations that the Panthers' legacy is set for re-discovery. Hilliard's founding of the Dr. Huey P. Newton Foundation with the late Panther leader's wife Fredrika, Spike Lee's "Huey P. Newton" PBS documentary and Tupac's mother Afeni Shakur (arguably the most well-known 'Panther 21' defendant) appearing on the September
"XXL" hip-hop newstand magazine's cover are all considered significant recent steps forward for the Panther Party by even the most critical historians.

As far as Juneja is concerned, besides recently receiving a powerful endorsement of support from Tupac's stepfather Dr. Mutulu Shakur (2003 marks the 16th year of his incarceration for Panther activities), the radio host of Indian heritage says his 2001 college research into the story of Sam Chaiton/Terry Swinton and subsequent 2-year relationship with Rubin "Hurricane" Carter's Association in Defence of the Wrongly Convicted (AIDWYC) allowed him to witness "the Panther revolutionary nationalism theory of political and economic freedom transcending any government-endorsed racial or religious differences" first-hand, a perspective he hopes more Canadians and members of "the Hip-Hop nation at large" will soon adopt and help put into practice.

"From flooding the ghettos of America with drugs in retaliation for Huey's empowerment of the poor to not stopping 9/11 from occurring as an excuse to up their arms contracts, it's time people knew the truth about US government agency 'acts of terrorism' on their own citizens," says Juneja. "Jennifer Garner can do all the recruitment videos she wants, the CIA will still never be able to wash the blood of the Panthers or e
