Why was Tupac chosen for the theme of your conference this year?
In my work it's pretty clear that Tupac is a symbol to a lot of kids. It's never been clear to me what was really going on. What I didn't think was that people we're dealing with it seriously. Trying to figure out how he worked as a folk hero for so many different types of youth and how he inspired or how he may have been a way for people to rationalize erratic behavior but also offer hope in the end. There is no one like him in hip hop.

Not even Biggie?
I don't know why Biggie doesn't become a figure like that in the same way. I think Biggie is incredibly important in hip hop. Biggie has probably saved more lives than Tupac. When I've been around youth and they're playing Biggie, they are often slapping each other's hand. Biggie did not become a public figure in terms of his body, his representation on magazine covers in terms of the popular press. Maybe its because he was heavy and he was dark, his story wasn't as fantastic as Tupac's, and he wasn't as successful (commercially) as Tupac. For better or for worse it became Tupac who is that figure.
