Hip-Hop Owns MTV Awards, Missy, Em, 50 & Luda Get Nods
Missy Elliot's "Work It" leads the 20th annual MTV Video Music Awards with eight nominations, including best Video of the Year, Best Female Video and Best Hip Hop Video.
The innovative rapper/writer/singer/producer has won twice for 2001's "Lady Marmalade" and her videos have been nominated 29 times since she first broke into the scene as a solo artist. Not too far behind are rap juggernauts Eminem and 50 Cent, who have both received five nods apiece. Em's "Lose Yourself" and 50's "In Da Club" join "Work It" for Video of the Year, in which three out of five nominations come from rap songs. While Em's videos have been nominated 26 times in only five VMA's, 50 is a first time nominee.
As usual, Hip-Hop is being honored in two separate categories, Best Rap Video and Best Hip-Hop video. Ludacris's "Move beeyatch," Nas' "I Can" and Tupac's "Thugz Mansion" will try to upset Em and 50 for best rap video. However, the Shady/Aftermath tandem was snubbed for Best Hip-Hop video. Instead, Nelly's "Hot In Herre," Busta Rhymes "What You Want," Snoop Dogg's "Beautiful," Jay-Z's "03 Bonnie And Clyde" and Missy will battle it out.
While their lead single "Break U Off" got quite a few spins, The Roots' "The Seed" will spar against fellow Okayplayer Common's "Come Close" for the MTV2 Award. Floetry continues to garner praise with two VMA nominations for Breakthrough Video and Best Special Effects. Sean Paul's "Get Busy" also collects two nominations, one for Best New Artist in a Video and the second for Best Dance video. Though none of his videos were nominated, P. Diddy still might take a moon man for his B2K collaboration "Bump Bump Bump."
The Viewer's Choice Award should determine whether 50 truly stole Slim's mojo as they face off in all but one category. The 2003 MTV Music Video Awards hosted by Chris Rock airs on August 28 at 8pm.
